The busy season continues!  It's been a couple weeks but here's what happened with us recently..

Church always does a program called Hearty Harvest, where families will get a bag of groceries and gift card to donate to those in need.  We've been doing it for a couple of years now and we joined again this year.  I lean into it pretty hard about how we are lucky to have more and should give when we can.  The kids did like finding and choosing which groceries to buy.  I tried to give them lessons about how to choose not the cheapest option but close when possible :)

With Jad and Sora's birthdays so close together, we usually have a couple of joint birthday parties to celebrate.  Our first involved the neighbors and school friends and we had a bunch of people over at our house.  It's been a long while since we've had such a big party (maybe 3 years) and it was a bit chaotic but the kids had a great time.  We got a bounce house in the backyard and pizzas from Costco!

All in all, an excellent party and hopefully signs of things to come.  I think COVID really did a number on us as a society and it's going to take years for the effects to reverberate and fade away.  We'll take it one step at a time, I suppose.

One silly bit, at work one day we had a trivia contest instead of our usual staff meeting.  I took first place, thank you very much though it wasn't til the very end that I pulled it up. 2nd place went to Derek Ng who is a friend from church :)  Sweet!

The week after was Amy's birthday.  Because it fell on a Thursday and the kids were off school both Thursday and Friday, we decided to take a 2-day trip up to SF to celebrate.  We started with a pancake breakfast for Amy.

After some gaming time, we went up to SF, stopped at In-n-Out on the way for early lunch and then met up with Dali and her family at the California Academy of Sciences.  Not only is it a spectacular museum but also we both bought the annual pass and we have to go at least twice to make it worth it!

After that we parted ways with Dali then drove over to Union Square to check in at the Westin.  I had used some points to get a room there and we got a free upgrade (I think the clerk felt sorry for us when he saw that we had three kids running around :) to a room with a view of the square.

Amy then took Sora ice skating which she really enjoyed.  The boys less so and they just walked around with me and helped to check out of the hotel.

We then went back across town to meet Kristin and Rich and their kids.  It was fun to catch up and to see the kids playing together :)  We really don't see each other enough for living just an hour away

That concluded our 2-day trip and celebration for Amy's birthday.  It was really nice and I'll see if I can continue in the coming years. On the way we did make a stop at Uncle Wilson's grave site as it was Veteran's day when Amy usually goes by.  It was nice to see all the little flags up.

This past Sunday, we had the second celebration for Sora and Jad.  This time with the church friends after church with five of the other families. The kids had a lot of fun playing together and the adults had fun catching up.  Cake from Clover Bakery was spectacular as usual.

And just a couple days ago, Kai finally got his cast off.  He wore it for about 5 weeks and got so used to using his left hand that sometimes he forgets to use his right hand now.  It'll probably take some getting used to again and will need some strengthening.  It's still not fully healed though and our biggest worry is that he'll forget and fall down on it again but what can you do.  The plate might not actually have to come out according to his orthopedist so we'll see in a repeat xray in a couple months.

Lastly, we have been having some cat drama.  The background is that one of our neighbor's cats had kittens a while back and the whole family was roaming the neighborhood.  Some people asked said neighbor to neuter the cats and I don't think they took that very well but one day, most of the cats were gone.  We're not sure but we suspect that they were dumped somewhere but who knows.  There was one cat that was somehow missed, named Sesame, and lately it's been hanging out at our house.  I think because there's no dog at our house and there's plenty of places to poop (yuck!)  But it's been getting really cold outside lately, so we felt bad for him and put out a little box and blanket for him to stay wam.  He did sleep in the cardboard box and then this led to us getting some cat food for him from the Connicks and water.  The kids love feeding him and petting him and he's mostly quite friendly so now we have become "those people" who feed stray cats (or one cat anyway).  We are all basically allergic to cats though so we can't really adopt him fully.  We have been careful to only feed him and avoid other cats or any raccoons.  Silly cat!  Though he is very cute when he's purring.

Halloween Fun // Jad's 5th birthday // Sora Sora Sora

 It's fall and we're entering our busy season.  November brings three birthdays (Jad, Amy and Sora) along with finishing Halloween, then Thanksgiving then moving on to Xmas.  There's also usually a couple of trips to the snow too so it's usually a busy time for our family.  

The kids kept it easy this year for Halloween.  I do get jealous of other families that dress up everyone in matching theme costumes, but I am rarely that into anything and forcing the kids to wear something they aren't interested in isn't our style either.  With his broken arm in a new cast from the orthopedist, Kai chose to redo his black cat from previous years.  The siblings took up the same theme and so she was also a (cuter) black cat and Jad chose to be Kwazii from Octonauts.

We also had our annual small group gathering with the south bay small group at Kevin Moran park.  Lots of fun.  Super nice weather.  Good friends.  Bo and Peggy's boba family was great!

We did the annual pumpkin carving with the neighbors.  Lots of people, lots of fun.  We ended up with three pretty good pumpkins this year with me carving most of Kai's (because of his hand) and Jad's too (his was pretty creepy actually).  Sora did a nice cat on a roof with moon scene.  The biggest revelation this year was to hole and empty the pumpkin from the bottom!  Whoa.. mind blown!

On Halloween, which fell on a Monday, we gathered with friend and neighbors and took all the kids over to Holly street, a nearby neighborhood that really gets into decorating and treats. We had about 20 kids in tow along with 20 parents.  It was a huge group moving down the street and a bit hard to manage.  Glad we didn't lose anyone as it got pretty busy at some points.  By the end of the night, Jad, AT and Kazu were all taking turns in the wagon.

All in all, a good time and the kids got lots of candy.  Now we just have to have them pick out about 20 and bring the rest to work :p

Sugar cravings and highs sated, we moved back on to normal.  Jad turned 5 and for his birthday, he and Amy made cupcakes.  He does have two parties (both joint with Sora) coming up but for his birthday, we kept it low key and just celebrated at home.

Lastly, Sora has been acting up a bit lately.  Lots of emotional outbursts and loss of control.  We have been trying to figure out how to help her regain control of herself when things go wrong and also trying to control our own anger and have patience as we watch her spiral into fits of grunting and crying.  It's not easy, kids feel lots of strong emotions and they don't know how to control them yet.  Still, that's no excuse for poor behavior.  I think we might start her in girl scouts soon.  Perhaps a mix of new friends, especially girls her age, can help.

I'll did get a chance to take Sora to gymnastics yesterday and it was nice to see her there as she's usually carpooling or Amy takes the girls.  She also enjoys piano so I'm glad she's got a couple activities that she can call her own.

Kai broke his arm // 13th Anniversary // Butt war!

Back to October 2022..  we got back from our trip to the Southwest and right back to our usual routines.

The last days of biking to school before it gets too cold

Unfortunately, that same Friday after art class, Kai fell off his bike and broke his arm.  The kids had all finished and were playing in front of the Connicks' house, riding bikes and jumping the ramps that had been pulled out.  Kai told me he was going to get his bike and I didn't think much of it until I saw him zooming towards the biggest bike ramp.  I had a split second when I thought, "maybe I should tell him not to do it," but he went by so fast I didn't get a chance to say anything.  I saw him hit the ramp and the bike flew up and then landed with the front wheel down.  Kai wasn't able to hang on to the bike and fell to the right, landing on his arm.  He cried right away and I ran over to see that he had a clear deformity of his right forearm.  He cried for the first minute but then I think was in shock and didn't really cry much after that.  I was a bit alarmed but I ran to tell the Connicks then went to get Amy and the car.  I got Kai in and drove him to the Kaiser Santa Clara ER immediately.  Lucky, that the ER wasn't too busy and we got brought in immediately.

We saw the orthopedist right away and he said the peds ortho surgeon would do the operation in the morning.  Kai was admitted and got IV abx.  He was still able to play a bit of Switch with his left hand for part of the evening.  I had a shift at 9am the next day so Amy got Sora and Jad ready for bed and then brought them to sleep over at the Connicks for the night.  She then came to switch with me and stay with Kai overnight on the peds floor.  I went home and ate some food and went to sleep to wake up the next morning at 6am to go back to the hospital as Kai's scheduled surgery was at 730am and I wanted to make sure to see him before.  I found him and Amy in the Pre-op area and then got to say hi to the surgeon before they brought Kai into the OR and I left to go work.

The operation took a couple hours and then Kai was back with Amy.  I saw them once more before they left the hospital and then Kai was home.  One of my friends, Ian, saw him in the ER and got him a game for the Switch to help him during his recovery.

He's done very well since even though some things needed adjustment.  Amy and I both said that it's good it happened to Kai as Sora and Jad would have been much harder to deal with.  Kai is so stoic that it made things easier.  He's recovering well and has an appt this week to follow up.  They will have to take out the plate in a few months but that's a worry for then.

The last week has been pretty quiet at home.  My mom is having some issues in Thailand.  She likely aspirated some food and got a lung infection so became more tired and didn't eat for two days.  My dad brought her in and they gave her abx and fluids and she will likely stay at the long term care floor at the hospital for now.  She can't return home as she can't walk at the moment and my dad can't take care of her that way.  Finger crossed for now, that she'll improve a bit.  Joe has also been having some trouble.  Back pain for him, Michelle had to have a minor surgery and Michelle's dad had a fall.  It is hard getting older.

On a positive note, Amy and I had our 13th anniversary yesterday.  We weren't able to plan too far ahead but we did drop the kids off and then went on a little date together.  First to Santo Market to get some poke and strawberry mochi then Nijiya Market to pick up some food and snacks.  Then we went to Hakone Gardens, where we had a picnic brunch and wandered around.

We capped the day hanging out with the Connicks and having dinner over there.  It's nice to have such good neighbors where we can spontaneously gather together!
