Calling in the reinforcements

Nik's mom arrived a few days ago to help us with Kai and Sora, and whether it's as a playmate for Kai or an extra pair of arms to hold Sora, having someone else around is really helpful.

It's funny, though Kai is only 18 months old, I forgot about all the nuances regarding newborn care: newborns sleep all the time, we're constantly changing diapers because she's constantly pooping, and of course, the sleep deprivation. But in spite of all the challenges, we're having a great time with our little girl. It's funny, when she was first born we thought she looked like a miniature girl version of Kai, but as time progresses we're starting to see her unique, distinct features: (I think) she has Nik's eyes, her nose, mouth, and chin are more petite, and her face is less round than Kai's.

Kai remains curious about his sister, but his days mostly consist of playing with papa or grandma, or just general monkeying around. Lately he's been really interested in trying on our shoes or grabbing our bags. He will grab one of our bags, then walk to the garage door and then wave and say "bye bye" as if he's going off somewhere. His repertoire of words has also increased: he now says "cat", "car" and the chinchillas are now "chin-chi". We're also trying to train Sora to sleep like a log, so she spends a lot of time snoozing in her chair while Kai runs around her.

Announcing the arrival of...

... our little baby girl, Sora Elise! On Thursday evening, I was admitted to the hospital because I was leaking amniotic fluid. After an uneventful and surprisingly easy delivery, our little girl was born only a few hours later early Friday morning.

We're still adjusting to life with two kids and the whole experience seemed a bit surreal given that she arrived a week early. Kai is curious about his little sister and immediately runs over to see what's going on whenever he hears her cry. We haven't noticed any sibling rivalry yet, though Kai is certainly enjoying his papa bonding time now that Nik is on paternity leave.

Amy's Birthday Weekend

Today was my 34th birthday. Unfortunately, Kai came down with a stomach bug complete with vomiting, diarrhea and a low-grade fever and that made this weekend tougher than usual, but Nik graciously watched Kai most of the weekend, while I attended a joint baby shower hosted by some of the ladies from our church and caught up with a few good girlfriends. There were some silly party games at the shower (see the picture below) and Kai loved the balloons that I brought home.

Fortunately, our little guy is such a trooper and being sick doesn't mean that he's out for the count. Still smiling, laughing and playing.. although not eating very well. Hopefully, he'll feel better soon!

A Belated Happy Halloween

This year, our neighbors let us borrow an old Winnie the Pooh costume for Kai to wear this Halloween. Try as we might, Kai refused to wear the costume, so we threw Kai's Batman shirt on and called it a day. In lieu of trick-or-treating, we went to a friend's Halloween party where all the papas in attendance posed for a picture with their respective kiddos although it was pretty impossible to get everybody to look at the same camera.

The end of daylight savings time did not turn out to be the disaster we thought it would be and we were pleasantly surprised when Kai actually slept in until 7 am on Sunday and Monday! (oh, the little joys in life)

Greg and Ali were also in town, so we had a chance to meet Parker for the first time. The boys had a play date in the park, although Kai mostly just stole Parker's toys and food.
