Nearing the end of school

Oh man, I thought I had published this entry but I guess I didn't finalize it.  School just let out a few days ago but we'll pretend we're back in time for two weeks ...

---

We're just a couple weeks away from the end of school.  Also the ending of soccer season for Kai and Jad :)  Lots of fun as the weather warms up!

Vic and Kegan went out of their kids had a sleepover
at our house.  AT joned in for the fun but didn't stay to sleep

They all fit into Sora and Jad's room.. asleep by 10!

One of Kai's soccer teammates, Logan, is in Scouts so we took Kai to the Scout-o-rama, where they have many booths from different troops, all showing off various skills and crafts.  The experience was colored because the bottle rocket thing failed and then they lost our rocket but it was enough to get some interest from Kai and we're going to try to go to one of Logan's troop events later this year.  Hopefully, he'll like it.  We really want him to find something he's more interested and passionate about.

Cool rocket but then the mechanism failed :(

Kai turned 10 (double digits!) and had several birthday parties: one with neighbors, one with school/church friends and one with family.  He's still a very sweet boy but getting older and more thoughtful.  Sensitive and introverted, we hope we are doing a good job allowing him to grow in some ways on his own and pushing him a bit i others.  Happy birthday, Kai!

Water balloons and gun fight!

Rainbow Jello and Brownies with candles

Neighbor's celebration with brownies too
(Amy accidentally made a 4X batch)

Sora is continuing in gymnastics.  Noe advanced to another level so Sora is working hard to catch up.  She has fun with it but doesn't really practice on her own much.  Again, we'd love to find something our kids are really passionate in but until then, we'll just keep encouraging the things they enjoy and learn from.

Kai has also been doing well with violin.  He had an end of year concert and it was really nice.  He is starting lessons, that he wanted on his own, with our neighbor, Jackie, this summer.

Looking sharp, dude

The kids are looking forward to the summer time as they think it'll mean unlimited video game / screen time but we'll probably still keep them restricted to some degree :)  Til next time, everyone!

Summer preview and various motley pics // Date night // Nik's Mom

I haven't posted for the last few weeks.  Mostly because it's been pretty quiet and we haven't been up to too much.  Just soccer for the boys and gymnastics / piano for Sora.  Girl Scouts Cookie season ended finally, much to Amy's relief as cookie chair.  A few notable pics below..

We had nice Easter get together with the South SJ
small group.  Easter egg hunt!

David got a giant paella pan and burner
so he made us a massive paella

Ethan has been coming over on Sunday afternoons
for playdates so that's been fun

A nice FriYay dinner with the usual RCC crew.  The fire
pit made a comeback now that it's not raining all the time

We joined the Shaws and watched the
Mario Bros movie in the theater :)
A special treat in contrast to streaming at home

A nice day on RCC during spring break

Kite flying weather :)

Adults ate while the kids played

Terry and Trang (mostly) finished their crazy
remodel, including a whole new Karaoke setup

Sora sold cookies with her troop at Lucky's

Jad is having lots of fun at soccer

Kai is doing great this season.  Getting a bit more aggressive
at going after the ball.  He's scored a couple goals too!

My soccer boys

The kids also helped me set up a couple garden boxes
in the front yard.  Jad was very excited to plant :)

Kai is still doing Jujitsu.  I'm not sure how much
he really likes it.  I never want to push the kids so
hard for something we want, rather than what they want

We have also had a bit of cat drama.  About two weeks ago, we noted that Sesame was bringing a friend around more often.  A little gray feral cat so we've been giving it a bit of food as well but it never allowed us to get close.  Then last week, Amy saw the gray cat in the carrier we had set outside and it was staying there for most of the day.  A closer look revealed four little kittens!  There were so cute and looked like little rats.  The kids were entranced as expected, especially Sora.  We continued to feed mama cat what we could, figuring she could use the calories while nursing the babies, though she hissed at us every time we came close.

We tried to leave it alone as much as possible, but it was hard as she was right at our front door.  The few days, we've seen the mama cat wandering around more, leaving the kitties behind for a short time.  And then 2 days ago, it looked like she had moved them behind our nearby AC unit.  Yesterday, I checked there and they weren't there anymore so she must have moved them again.  It made us a bit sad but we did everything we could to try to help her.  She is still coming by a couple times a day and when she does, we give her some food.  The kids have a plan to track her and find the kittens if possible.

I snuck a pic of the kitties when mom was out

Amy and I also had a date night.  The Kimballs babysat the kids in thanks for us hosting small group every couple of weeks.  We went to get tapas at Vida in Mountain View (nice place, fairly good food, a bit pricey but mostly it was nice to be out without the kids) and then went to a performance at a local theater.  It was very small and neat to see something the kids probably wouldn't sit through.  It was a series of 9 short acts, some were mediocre and some were good.  The actors were amateurs and likely had day jobs with this as their passion project.  It's unlikely that they made any money from putting on the shows and likely had to contribute their own money to keep the doors open.  Still, it was fun and a nice reminder to follow your dreams even if you have a day job :)

There has also been a lot of turmoil at work.  One of our beloved nurses, John Muncy, passed away.  He had been having some medical problems but still a shock for someone so young.  Then our ED chief, Joel, decided to step down and there will be a search for a new leader for the dept soon.  All this along with some conflict and grumblings about our schedule and scheduler.  Hopefully, some positive changes coming as I work to help steer us in the right direction.

Lastly, my mom passed away on 4/27,just over a week ago now.  She's been sick the last few days, even more so than her usual state, and I was already worried about her.  She had a fever and oxygen levels were low, maybe some aspiration.  I'd been waking up at night and checking LINE to see messages from my dad and he said on that day, her oxygen level gradually went down and she went to sleep.  The doctors asked if they should put her on a ventilator but he declined, which I am glad for.  She slept and then passed away in the evening.  It's been a long time coming over all so it didn't hit me hard, just bits of sadness here and there.  I am grateful that she went without struggle and that she is no longer suffering.  I've compartmentalized it to one part of life and have been carrying on but I think it's probably leaking out in the form of some insomnia and loss of patience.  We've been checking in with my dad.  He's always laconic and stoic, as older Asian men tend to be, but you can tell he's lost a part of himself.  He's likely to keep moving though and eventually will find something to work on to anchor him again. I do have to video chat with him and the kids which I think he really enjoys.

My mom never believed in much of an afterlife, just that when you died, you ceased to exist and I respect that.  I do know that if anyone deserved to get into Heaven or Nirvana or whatever paradise of your naming, then my mom certainly did.  Rest now, mom, you were great and we loved you very much.

Spring time fun

Hi Everyone!  Nothing much going on the last couple weeks.. we're getting outdoors more as the weather is finally getting a bit better here.  The rains have largely stopped and the days are warm, though the mornings and evenings are still quite cold.  I got all the bikes out yesterday and pumped up all the tires and oiled the wheels so we can ride them.

When the sun is out, Jad will want to have his lunch
on the curb out front
Kai started with soccer again.  He's having fun with half
of his team being kids we know from before.  Go Vipers!

Jad also started playing soccer.  He's on the team with
his friend Conner from TK so they are doing great.

One day, we went to the church office and this guy was
there with a bunch of puppies (his dog had a litter)..

Super cute and the kids loved them but we said
 definitely no more animals

I had a chance to go with Kai on his field
trip to Mission San Juan Bautista

They made their own tortillas and ate them!  It was
nice to see Kai interacting with his classmates

Amy is usually more free so she gets to go on more trips with the kids.  This is
Sora and her crew at the U.S.S. Hornet

If the weather is nice, Jad and his friend Yashew (and others)
will run around in front of their school.  Sometimes dads will join in :)

Penelope's birthday party.  The inflatable obstacle course
was a big hit :)

Sora also had her first piano recital which went well.  She was nervous
but played very well (to my ears)

That's about it really.  We have spring break coming up next week, though we aren't even planning to do much as I'm working for many of the days.  Hopefully, the situation at work will improve soon (we're understaffed by at least 4 docs so no one can take much vacation).

I'll leave you with this nice pic of the RCC moms going out.  They all went to the nearby Big Dog Winery last Sunday afternoon.  Amy said the wine was all right but still nice to get away for a couple hours while the dads watched the kids :)

Mom's day out!

San Jose Life // Girl Scout Cookies Season // Soccer-time // Visit from the Hara's // Nik Baptism

Just carry on with regular life here the last couple of weeks.  The weather is improving a bit though it's still too cold for my liking.  The rain has been mostly steady but we get more sunny days now and I'm looking forward to spring.  Hope the summer won't be crazy hot this year.  On to the pictures!

Jad on crazy hair day.. he's more daring
than either Kai or Sora were

Kids made a cool fort with the
stick and ball construction kit

Then they decided to sleep downstairs :)

We snuck in a brunch date while the kids were in school

Kai lost a tooth (actually, Sora did too)

Sora started selling girl scout cookies which has been an experience.  Amy is the cookie chair of their troop so she's spending a lot of time organizing with all the other moms.  It seems like a big MLM scam using child labor to me.  Each troop gets 80 cents of each $6 box of cookies, about $1.50 goes to the cookie maker and the rest goes to the girl scouts organization.  Oh well, the cookies do mostly sell themselves.  Sora isn't even trying very hard and she's sold almost 100 boxes already.

She went to wander the neighborhood with all the kids

Josh, next door, celebrated his 3rd birthday so we finally got a look into David and Janet's house.  It was a lot of fun and we had a ton of Chinese food :)  They are great neighbors!

Jad was more excited about the gift than Josh

Kai and Casey are watching closely

We've been playing street soccer with the kids.  Adults vs kids and we adults are 3 games to nothing on the kids side.  He hee, take that kids!  jk, it's just for fun and I'm sure they'll win soon.  I wish the cars on our street would slow down though..

Street soccer style

Speaking of which, both Kai and Jad started back for spring soccer.  Kai also restarted Jujitsu so he has those two activities.  Sora has gymnastics, piano and girl scouts.  Jad just has soccer for now.

Jad is with his friend Conor from
TK so he's having lots of fun

The Hara's were in town for a few days so they dropped by for dinner.  It was nice catching up with them and learning about their life in Colorado.  One day we'll have to make a visit out there.

Always nice to see old friends

Last, and probably most important, I got baptized this past weekend.  It was another step in a long series of steps so no dramatic changes or miracles but it was still a significant one.  Hopefully, it'll make me a better person with more patience, compassion and joy.

Giving the testimony in front of everyone.  David, Matt and
the whole Huang family made it to witness

The water of life is cold and refreshing.. actually, mostly
just really cold :D

That's all for now. Til next time!

Ok ok, one last picture of this goofball kid :)
